Behavioral interventions to help people quit smoking are an important tool in the fight against the world's leading preventable cause of death. Linda Collins proposes taking a radically different approach to development of smoking cessation interventions, one based on the same engineering principles that enabled the 1969 moon landing. By taking this approach, it is possible to develop smoking cessation interventions that are more effective, efficient, cost-effective, and practical. The same approach can be used in many other areas of public health, for example prevention and treatment of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and obesity. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
