TEDxPSUSalon Relics to Revolutions: Synthesizing Sustainability
The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 13th at the New Leaf Initiative at 100 S. Fraser Street. The event is focused around living sustainably, and will examine how to maintain sustainable mindsets and practices. The event will feature speakers Spud Marshall, creator of the New Leaf Initiative, and Allison Lilly, Outreach Expert for the national competition EcoCAR, and will be hosted by Mike Shamalla. Dessert and coffee has been generously donated by EcoVents. We hope to see you there!
Speakers:
Host: Mike Shamalla, MLA, ASLA
Mike is a landscape architect currently working for Envinity, a local company that provides sustainable energy services to homes and businesses and promotes greener communities. As a landscape architect, Mike specializes in public space and Mike’s current work as an Energy Engineer at Envinity focuses on uncovering energy savings for commercial customers. In addition to his work with Envinity, Mike has always had a strong community focus through his work as radio show host on the Lion 90.7 FM. Mike also enjoys physical activities like bike-riding, skiing, hockey and hiking.
Spud Marshall
An engineer by training who has strayed and found his passion within the growing sustainability movement as a global change-maker. He is a sustainability consultant, social entrepreneur, and big believer in the power of good people. After graduating from Penn State with an Honors degree in Engineering, he traveled to Sweden to obtain a Master’s degree in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability. Today, he lives in State College, PA and runs an organization called New Leaf Initiative, which is designed to provide individuals and organizations with immersive experiences to enhance their understanding and application of sustainability. Over the years, Spud has worked with companies including the BBC, Staples and International Paper. Despite the task at hand, he has a knack for finding himself in different countries around the world and loves sharing in the stories of so many different people. He has an obsessive passion for fog machines and believes strongly that this generation has the ability to truly change the world and make a significant difference for the future. Allison Lilly
A third-generation Penn Stater, is a native of Altoona, PA and graduated from Altoona Area High School in 2008. Allison has held internships at a local television station, the Eberly College of Science, Dick Jones Communications and the Campus Sustainability Office in State College, Pa. and CooperKatz & Co. in New York City. Building on her sister’s example and encouragement to live sustainably, Allison decided to join the outreach team for the EcoCAR Challenge as a sophomore. During her junior year, Allison accepted a graduate student fellowship through the U.S. Department of Energy and was the youngest Outreach Coordinator competing in Year Three of EcoCAR. She placed fourth overall and won the Spirit of Outreach Award and Best Outreach Progress Reports. Allison planned 55 outreach events with community, youth, and local, state and national government. She also secured media in international outlets and designed an EcoCAR iPhone App. Allison has accepted another fellowship for Year One of the EcoCAR 2 Competition. Allison is a senior pursuing a major in public relations and minors in environmental inquiry and psychology, and holds positions as the National Liaison for the Lawrence G. Foster Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America and the Director of Business Affairs for Happy Valley Communications.
